I just picked up my copy of RE:CoM and was so excited to play, just to hit a huge roadblock.
My game stops loading during the tutorial fight with Marluxia in Traverse Town and makes it virtually impossible to move forward.
I have been looking around on the net, and have found too many similar cases, but no explanations.
I own a NA PS3 80GB and when I purchased it, almost a year ago, I was ensured that it could play PS2 games. As a matter of fact, I play Kingdom Hearts II on my PS3 all of the time, I even started a new file with a virtual memory card and played it from start to finish without any bugs whatsoever.

So, what's up with RE:CoM?

Who else has this problem?

Have you found any solutions?

Not all PS3's are fully backwards compatible. The old 80gigs (like yours and mine) from last year were around 80%, which was the best you could get I believe.

What?
Not that I do not believe you, but that sounds crazy. I mean, for how much money they cost and for the retailers to say that it is compatible, for it to be a lie?
How can they sell such an expensive product that only works 80% of the time?

I don't mean to sound naïve, but seriously?

Unfortunately, he's quite correct.

Personally, I think Sony deserves their cozy little third place position only because of this fact. It's an undeniable truth that the PS3 has been lacking in exclusives and exclusive content, yet the vast majority of PS3 owners had a PS2 (thus, a large library of exclusive PS2 games). Yet Sony felt the need to remove backwards compatibility from the PS3. What a pain in everyone's collective *ss.

Anywho, I own the 60gb model PS3 (the only "true" backwards compatible version outside of the 20gb) and I must say that RE:CoM looks like garbage on it. The actual exploration and battles are good enough, but the cutscenes are just awful. Most of the time they are so blurry I can't tell the difference between Marluxia and Namine. Once, the game wouldn't even load. My screen went berserk and a strange noise made my dog start barking.

Bottom line; if you have a PS3 and you want to play PS2 games on it...just don't. Buy a PS2 if you have to. In my opinion, no PS3 is actually backwards compatible. They are either "not compatible at all" or "compatible enough to let you play for a few minutes before you wish you hadn't".

This is actually so wrong. The American 60GB model is the only true backwards compatible version. The European 60GB model is in the same boat as the 80GB. I dislike it when people go around touting the 60GB model as the one perfect model, which, sure, in America it was, but in Europe it was the same as the "downgraded version."
As for RE:CoM looking like shit, it always looked like that. Even in the FM+ bundle. Believe me, I could hardly stand watching those cutscenes. They used an excessive blur effect as some sort of anti-aliasing substitute, which makes it look horrid. I play all my PS2 games on my PS3 and they look fine. They won't look as good when played on an HDTV, because they were made for SDTVs. The HDTV stretches them out and blurs them, unless you play at regular size with no smoothing. Then they look as they always would.

As for the problem at hand, there's not much you can do. Ever since Sony stopped manufacturing backwards compatible systems they also stopped updating the software emulation. Or so I believe, they might still be updating it behind the scenes, so look forward to the next update. Play on a PS2 for now. Either way, you're not missing much...

Well this is the reason I'm keepimg my PS2 and getting a base 40G PS3 when I'm ready.

My nephew has an 80G so I have to warn him there might be problems.

Okay then, just to clarify, I own the American model.

Uhm, If i'm not mistaken; Aren't all the Cutscenes blurred in some way? I played on Ps2 and PS3 so far and no problems. But I really don't think that a PS3 lowers any kind of quality for ps2 games?

That's right. Jetzudan kindly corrected me. My PS2 is hooked up to an old 20" CRT TV in my bedroom, while my PS3 is hooked up to a 55" HDTV in the family room. Major difference.
I just didn't notice the blurring as much on my older TV because, well, it's just a crummy TV.

I got it on release date and have been playing it on my 60g American PS3 ever since. Haven't hit a roadblock. Sucks that the new ones are backwards compatible.

Taken from the last Geek Blogs at http://aberdeenworks.net/games/?p=579 (the instructions and the files, anyways)

If you have a PS3 and you're having this issue like I had, follow the instructions posted on the site. From there, just copy/paste from whatever USB drive/SD card you were using and copy it to one of your internal memory cards.
