so i may have figured out what 3d is about based on the newest interview.
it states that the secret ending of recoded is importan. so perhaps its they are training for the mastery exam by reexperiencing the last 2 years of their life. that may explain why they are in their kh1 bodies.
make sense or am i just reading in too much?

I don't think there's much doubt about KH3D involving Sora and Riku's Mark of Mastery exam.

However, it's hard to say whether or not at this point that Sora and Riku will appear as they are in KH2 or KH1. Nomura said they specifically designed the 3D demo so as not to give much away plot wise.
In other words, their KH1 outfits might not actually have any relevance.

Well, I imagine the reason they used the KH1 models is because they were already ready, but the whole teaser was simply a demonstration of what the 3DS is capable of instead of something relevant to the plot itself.

Like the Final Fantasy VII PS3 Tech Demo?

At least it's getting made this time

Well, crap. Turns out through some convoluted reason, they ARE going to be their KH1 selves. Well, ****.

Of course they are, Nomura might have said that what was shown was a test run, but he said the same thing about Another Side another story, Deep Dive, The Gathering, Birth by Sleep. It never ends, like that movie that Journey sang about.

My theory is that since Sora & Riku have both kinda already saved all the worlds... it'd be kind of unfair to give them the mastery exam as if they were students, just learning how to use the keyblade when they've already risked their lives countless times. So I feel like the point of them being their KH1, younger selves is so that they can learn the old-fashioned way just like Ventus, Terra and Aqua.

Plus there's that whole thing about DiZ/Ansem the Wise put data inside of Sora.

My whole take on 3D is that the whole game will be the Mark of Mastery Exam. We all know that the exam is going to show up for Sora and Riku some time, and this would be a fun way to do it and for Square to make another huge profit.

In the lastest interview from Nomura, he said that Sora and Riku will take their Mark of Mastery Exam at some points of the story, I don't know what he meant by that though?

I think hopefully from the last interview the mark of mastery plotline will not take up too much of the game, leaving room for other interesting story elements to take place (such as the potential return of our favourite, never dying, antagonist ).....Yay!

My guess for the plot is that Sora and Riku have their Mark of Mastery exams in their own individual dream worlds, as seen with what Nomura said. He has stated that Sora and Riku go on their own adventures, and that Sora and Riku just happened to be in the same area at the same time at the end of the trailer in which Riku confronts Ansem, and Sora confronts Xemnas. This has brought me to believe the dream world theory, and I believe that the dream is supposed to be much like their new adventure will be like reliving their first adventure, except they go to different worlds. If this is a dream world, then I think that now will be the perfect time to include a Pinnochio world, and maybe the Tim Burton version of Wonderland.

I doubt it will be them "training" for it as such. I think that the Game will in its entirety be the mark of mastery exam. And that at the end with Xehanorts Heartless and Xemnas defeated, Master Xehanort (Terranort) will be reformed and that will sett he stage for KH3 (with Master Sora and Riku trying to find and defeat him)... But I dunno, that might be a bit simple for a Kingdom Hearts plot :D
