Story-wise I feel that BbS (while I LOVE the game) really (as many people have noted) convoluted the story and supersaturated the KH universe with new twists and plot points (for example, making the origins of Xehanort known, but still further confusing audiences). I think the biggest problem with KH now, which is pretty commonly recognized, is that it's no longer just a "pick up and play" game.
To understand KH in its most basic form you have to play KH1, CoM, and KH2.
In order to make sense of any future installment you'd have to play BbS.
To fill in some blanks that have been presented, but aren't completely necessarily to be played would be 358/2 Days and Coded.
So, in it's most basic form at the current, you'd need a PS2. Easy enough.
To get future installments you'd need a PSP. Not too bad.
To fill in the blanks, you'd need a DS. That's where things get sketchy (I don't feel many people own both a PSP and a DS...).
So... yeah, I think KH's biggest problem is how its games are all over and how you cant just jump on the KH bandwagon that easily anymore..

I agree with your points here. KH2 felt like they shoved WAY too many ideas onto one title. They should've saved some ideas for the next major KH game instead. Also didn't like how they added Pirates of the Caribbean into it to milk that franchise more.
I personally thought the Drive Forms were unnecessary. I especially didn't like having to level them up just use my old abilities from KH1.

However the gameplay has become kinda easy and one dimensional for me since KH2. KH1 has puzzling and platforming to some degree and spells/summons actually meant something. Now its fight heartless, next room, fight heartless, next room, cut scene, fight heartless, boss...oh well-nothing critical mode cant remedy.

Now, that you mention it, the the new Districts of Traverse Town looks so lively and detailedly drawn, (if that made any sense).
